FIGHTING ABORTION WITH LOVE

It is easy to demonstrate with clarity that the popular pro-abortion agenda cannot withstand moral or intellectual scrutiny. It doesn’t take rocket science intellect to justify laws to protect the unborn, given that laws always impose morality and if prudent the laws must reflect rational thought, be intellectually sound, and be based on the core dignity of each individual. More difficult and more important is making our pro-life stand reflect the Creator of our rational thought and intellect, that glorious Being that is also the Creator of love.

We are each created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26, 27), thought of from eternity, an unrepeatable and unique version of His image, precious in His sight. This core level of value cannot be discounted by any individual or governing authority.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” (John 3:16), that being Jesus Christ. Jesus said to His disciples, “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34, 35). Jesus said to His Heavenly Father, “Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:21-23).

According to the Bible, it is God’s plan that the world learn about God by observing His followers. Our relationships with non-believers, with each other, and especially in our marriages are to be living, loving reflections of His nature. Though I believe in all manner of non-violent opposition to abortion, I believe that our best weapon is living in relationships that glorify God and make Him more fully known. Thereby we give our best evidence of the depths of God’s love.

To the extent that we have not done this, we are to a significant degree accountable for many that reject the one true God and His biblical precepts. To the extent that we reveal God’s holy and wondrous character, our prayers will pierce through this present darkness so dense that a large segment of our population feels good about their supporting the brutal slaughtering of innocent children.

Our ultimate Pro-life goal must be that the Earth may know that there is a God who treasures us, imparts to us inestimable worth, and wants personal communion with us. We Christians cannot bring that about as long as we busy ourselves with inter-denominational squabbles and one-upmanship and as long as so many of our marriages are in shambles. The Pro-life rally this Saturday that marks the 31st anniversary of nationwide legalization of abortion is an opportunity to deepen our connectedness to God and to each other. I pray that we remain humble and teachable and always respond in love.
