Frederick Spoerl in his 8/8/08 letter to the editor protests atheists’ having to utilize money with “In God we Trust” and being “intimidated” into saying “under god” in our pledge. As in previous letters, he flatters himself and other atheists for being free-thinkers and “brave” enough to stand “up against the prolific fundamentalist Christians that live in this valley.” He repeats his previous misrepresentation of Thomas Jefferson, saying that he would be “turning over in his grave seeing what has been done to the great secular country he envisioned.” |
Mr. Spoerl disregards the rights of the millions in this country who believe that removing God from government places us in the most grievous peril, a belief far more common than that of atheists. He chooses to ignore the well-documented historical fact that our founding fathers, notably Thomas Jefferson, agreed with those who currently predict doom if this nation doesn’t turn back to God. Jefferson is quoted on the memorial in Washington DC that bares his name: "And can the liberties of a nation be though secure if we have lost the only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God: That they are not to be violated without His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.” |
